Late 90's, telecom companies overspent to build out network capacity, and in less than 5 years bandwidth prices dropped like a stone.


This storage "pricing apocalypse" could go either way. If the AI business is as profitable and competitive as some hope, and the built capacity actually gets used, it will be like buying a graphics card during the pandemic. But if the market shakes out and new efficiencies are developed in the AI training process, you might find you can get a pallet of surplus hardware for cheap.

I heard this interview about how lenders and investors don't realize how different this capex is from traditional buildouts. Like, the money is spent on these data centers, but unlike traditional buildings half of your spend (GPUs) loses its value after 2-3 years.  And right now data center customers are willing to pay a premium due to limited supply, but that bottleneck is likely to disappear fairly soon. 

This reminds me of the dark fiber buildout of 20 years ago (except then, the fiber that was laid was still good for years and years to come). This will not end well.

I wrote an AI policy for my last org. I would have preferred a blanket “No AI” policy, but it just wasn’t practical for the state of the team. I don’t have access to it now, but the crux of it was:

- Human work is always preferable
- No putting any personal data or sensitive organizational data into any AI programs
- If you choose to use generative AI for brainstorming, copy, etc, you are absolutely required to personally edit everything prior to use. 
- AI-generated images are expressly prohibited. If you are in need of a certain type of image, contact the Communications Manager and they will help source one for you or advise you on an alternative.

I also wrote a long diatribe about the environmental impact of generative AI so that people could take that into account when deciding whether to use it.

In short, we have a set of AI tools that are allowlisted. PII and Client/donor data are not allowed to go in, but aggregated data can. Tools that aren't on the list are not allowed to be used, but when I've wanted to add things the CTO has been open-minded.

We don't explicitly ban using it for writing copy but are paying close attention to writing quality. Are concerned about AI slop going into external facing materials.

We are encouraged to use the AI platform purchased and the policy is that no sensitive information about anything or anyone that is identifiable should be used. Because even though it specifically says it won’t be using our data for machine learning, to always remember that it can easily be subpoenaed- do you want your work subject to that? We work in education with educators in their classrooms. Lesson plans, schedules. Writing letters to parents so you don’t sound like you think they are morons. It helps.

I get the frustration with AI music, but honestly, I don’t think the “effort” argument really holds up. The entertainment world has never been a level playing field where work = reward.

Think about it — there are people making insane money on OnlyFans or Instagram just because they were born good-looking and know how to market it. Nobody says “hey, that’s unfair to people who studied fashion design or photography for years.” It just is what it is — beauty + demand = income.

Same goes for music itself. We’ve all seen rappers blow up off meme tracks about the most random stuff, sometimes with zero skill, just pure luck or a catchy joke. And they still get paid, streamed, booked for shows. Nobody’s checking whether they studied music theory or practiced an instrument for a decade.

So why should AI be different? Yeah, typing in a prompt isn’t the same as shredding on a guitar, but working with AI still takes vision, taste, and creativity to make something that people actually connect with. That is a skill.

At the end of the day, it’s the audience that decides what has value, not some imaginary “effort police.” If people vibe with an AI track enough to stream it, put it on playlists, or even buy it, then it’s earned its place.

To me, that makes AI-generated music just as valid as a model monetizing their looks or a meme rapper blowing up off a silly song. If people want it, then it deserves to be taken seriously.

I get your point, but we can’t deny the fact that technology keeps evolving so fast, and its main purpose is to make things easier, not to replace humans. AI isn’t here to take over, it’s here to help us do things faster and simpler. Same goes for musicians — if they see AI as the enemy, they’ll end up being left behind. Instead, they should learn how to use AI as a tool to make their work easier and create even greater music.

At the end of the day, AI will only be as good as the direction it’s given. Sure, anyone can access AI and make songs with it, but not everyone can create something truly amazing out of it. That’s where listeners come in — the real measure is still how many people actually enjoy the music.

So, in my opinion, as long as AI musicians are creating original and good-quality songs with their own creativity (not just copying someone else’s work), it shouldn’t be a problem and there’s no need to limit their distribution. If there has to be stricter rules, I think they should only apply to songs that clearly copy existing works, violate copyright, or are just really low quality — like stuff that’s thrown together carelessly with bad sound, lyrics, or music.

The other issue, is that there are plenty of people here that are not audiophiles. Meaning they don't listen to their song in the best possible setting. People trying to 100% complete a song from start to finish with only a mobile device and maybe some headphones, but not the best quality. The reason why this is an issue is that I have seen countless suno generations sound GREAT on a device like a mobile phone, until you put it on some real speakers and realize, there is no low end of that song. It's all medium-high range. I have heard tracks on Youtube that also brag the track is on Spotify and that song has zero low end on Youtube. I am not giving anyone a click to verify if the Spotify version is just as bad, but I will assume it is, since they don't even seem to know they have no bass at all on the YT vid.

I would like to see 2 parts to streaming services. First a user setting where they can willingly check a box to opt into AI Music. Enabling the end user to say whether or not they want AI music. Second heavier enforcement of AI music on those platforms. Either by having them disclose it's AI and if they lied, penalized for it. 3rd would be a lower payout, since an AI artist can crank out infinite albums in a month.

Real artists can't do that. BUT before you AI bros come running in here acting like that's a failure of the musician. The other part that the AI bros miss is that once that album is done. The real artists spends months-YEARS promoting that single album to drive their brand/name. Whereas in AI you can dump an album, freak out that 3 weeks went by and it didn't get a lot of traction and just dump 2 more albums while pepper spraying AI subs with the Spotify link, thinking they are promoting their track and maybe getting 4-5 clicks each time. 1 album doing 1,000 steams daily is always going to be more productive/profitable long term than 10 albums getting 10 steams a day.

Let's look at this issue in its true dimension: what actually creates the music is the AI. And the AI belongs to a company. Therefore, the creator is an "entity," a "machine" that belongs to someone else and not to us who provide the "instructions" regarding the output we want to receive. Given this, if we assume that any intellectual property in AI-generated music were to be recognized, it would belong to the owning company.

What actually happens in this case is that the owning company practically "sells" the final output to the prospective buyer (the one who created the prompt) in the same sense that a car company sells a car. When we buy a car, we acquire ownership of that car and not of its intellectual creation. We cannot say that we made the car, that the manufacturer's logo belongs to us, or that the car's brand name has been transferred to us. We simply acquire ownership of an object; it passes into our exclusive possession and use.

The same thing happens with AI-generated music. We have the right to commercial use, and in this sense, any output belongs to us. It's like signing an agreement with the company that we can commercially exploit their product. Given this, my opinion is that this category of music (which I believe it's a given will constitute a huge share of the global music economy in the next 5 years) should be treated as what it is: Machine-generated content distributed by someone who has the right to commercial use.

Therefore, monetization should be possible, with revenues shared equally between the company that owns the technology that created the output and the holder of the commercial use rights. And of course it should be clearly tagged as "AI Generated". This is my opinion, of course - I might be seeing it wrong.

It's a blurry line. I'm a composer and use Suno for fun (I feed it basic piano compositions and let it do its thing, which is a bit more fun than 4-6 hours I take doing every orchestration in Logic Pro.)

Mediocre music is going to be mediocre. The way I've always seen AI is that the tool is ONLY as good as the person using it.

That said, bad music will not perform well regardless of AI generated or not. Same with ones ability to market. If you don't have a distribution channel and a base it won't matter either way.

Quite honestly I would advice every small/indie artist to keep their day job and not rely on earning money with their art. Why? Because even without AI the mark is over-saturated. People do not listen to music since spotify, they have it as a background noise. It shows especially in the fact, that many people do not select what they want to hear but leave some playlist running. So making money with music is an iffy proposition at best,. 

Secondly, many artists with big names have starting using AI themselves. So pot &gt;&gt;&gt; kettle.

Now about the "human made" or "hand made" Music... there was a song in my native language "Ein Stck Musik von hand gemacht" (A piece of music made by hand) which came out in the 80ies. The song praised music that was "made by hand" and "written by a person with their own head" and actually sounded like a person singing and could be performed even in the middle of a blackout. The song also made fun of Rock and any other music form being depended on power and electrics. What I mean to say is: the debate of what constitutes human made music is far older than AI, and it is ultimately useless. Ai is a tool, nothing more. I am sure that when it comes down to it, real quality will shine through.

  
BUT - a lot of handmade/indie music is also just mediocre. Like a lot of books published each year are just that. Everyone may dream of writing THAT song, or THIS bestseller, but 99% never will. Which brings me back to my original statement: do not quit your dayjob, and do your art because you enjoy it, not because you desperately want to make money of it.

Also, maybe Apple et al should make it easier to add your own music with the same features that using a distributor gives you? Synced lyrics + haptics + spatial audio would be a great start. I spend more time on that than I do on the songs, and frankly, a distributor is the only way to use those features.

Lol. You think you can easily earn when you distribute your music? Not a chance.. Spotify won't even start to pay you until you reach 1k streams on each of your song. Anyone can distribute their songs anytime, anywhere even when AI is not a thing.

I believe companies can do whatever they want. The question is should they ban music because of how it was made. If you think Spotify is full of top quality music? Well I guess that’s your opinion. My opinion there’s garbage everywhere; the music space is full of garbage. We as listeners just sort through it. When we land on something that strikes us, we like, purchase or share. Why can’t A.I generated music be a part of that sorting freedom. In the end it’s not about the artist it’s about the listening public and their freedom of choice. I just think this is a bubble argument among people who create music. Listeners only care if a song makes them laugh, cry or dance. I have heard A.I tracks that can do all three many times over.
